Mounjaro is a prescription medicine used along with diet and exercise to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may also help with weight loss in some people, but it’s prescribed based on your clinician’s assessment. Mounjaro is given as a once-weekly injection under the skin and works by helping your body release insulin when needed, reducing how much sugar your liver makes, and slowing digestion to help you feel fuller.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, bloating, feeling tired, dizziness, injection-site reactions (redness or itching).
Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain that may spread to the back), gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas), kidney problems due to dehydration, severe allergic reactions, worsening diabetic retinopathy, and possible risk of thyroid tumors (seen in animal studies).
Seek medical help immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or vision changes.
Mounjaro is taken once weekly as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin).
Typical dosing schedule:
Start: 2.5 mg once weekly (starter dose)
Increase to 5 mg once weekly after 4 weeks
Dose may be increased gradually up to 15 mg once weekly, based on tolerance and clinical response
Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for dose adjustments.
